How is big data affecting education?

Big data is a term used by different industries and areas across the globe. It represents a large quantity of data that influences organisations on a regular basis, allowing them to analyse information and make more informed decisions. Data analytics gives businesses the possibility to find new opportunities, increase profits and have more satisfied customers.

Recently, the education sector has been influenced by big data, offering educators the possibility to teach students using exciting and innovative methodologies.

How has big data positively affected the education sector?

Currently, institutions have a large amount of student and faculty information to analyse in order to improve their services and provide bespoke experiences.

In addition, by analysing this information, universities are able to improve student results. During the whole education process, learners generate unique data sets,  showing how they behave and engage with specific topics. These pieces of information are then analysed by educators who are able to identify those students who lack the knowledge and need support in particular topics.

Big data can also be used to predict the future behaviour of students, preventing their dropouts. In this context, teachers are able to see changes in students’ performance by analysing information and reacting accordingly to adjust their learning. This way, learners can improve in their studies and get ready for a graduate job.

Big data has enabled the creation of customised programmes with the help of blended learning, a mixture of online and offline learning. This methodology enables students to follow classes and study at their own speed, while still having the support of their lecturer. Also, with this method, various universities created Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to share their programmes internationally.

Through the analysis of these pieces of information, institutions have started curated new courses in response to students’ demand. Additionally, with the use of big data analytics, universities have started to explore the market and employment trends providing students with all the skills they need to succeed in a dynamic business-oriented world.

Big Data has changed different sectors of our society and education is not an exception. With this in mind, higher education institutions have adopted analytical tools to better understand learners’ data and provide unique experiences.
