Student health: tips for well being

Living at university and being away from home for the first time can make students feel stressed and under pressure. This is because they need to familiarise themselves with a new city and make new friends while working through coursework and assignments. Throughout this transition period, it’s important that students take care of themselves and make their health a priority.

In this post, we’ve put together a list of tips to help you lead a healthy lifestyle.

  • Getting enough sleep
    When you’re at university it’s easy to end up partying every day. However, it’s crucial you get enough sleep to focus on your studies and succeed in your exams. Make sure you sleep at least seven hours at night so you’ll wake up with a positive attitude, ready to be productive for the whole day.
  • Take part in sports or go for a walk
    Staying physically active is fundamental if you want to stay healthy. Practising sports or exercising in the gym will allow you to release endorphins that make you feel more energetic along with helping your mood. Also, did you know that people who are active are less likely to feel depressed and anxious?
    If you don’t want to go to the gym by yourself, you could join a university sports club; take a look at your students’ union activities and get involved!
  • Eat healthily
    Having a healthy diet is crucial for your wellbeing. Try to reduce the amount of junk food you eat and replace it with lots of fruits and vegetables – they will help to boost your energy level so you can feel healthy and in a good mood for the whole day. Also, recent research has shown that healthy meals are key to reducing mental health conditions.
  • Enjoy every single moment
    Yes, you are at university to get a degree, but being there doesn’t mean you have to stay in your room and never go out. Try to maintain a balance between your university work and private life. It’s important that you have fun and enjoy yourself.
  • Peak with others
    As you’re away from home, you need to socialise with other people to avoid loneliness and isolation. Chatting with classmates on your course, joining clubs and societies and going to events are good ways to improve your wellbeing! 

 

Living away from home for the first time is an exciting and nerve-racking experience. However, it’s important that you look after yourself and your well-being. By following the tips above, you’ll always be happy and healthy. And remember to make the most of the time spent at uni!
