It’s the beginning of the academic year and many students are trying to be as organised as possible, attempting to understand how to access their modules and reading lists through their personal VLE.
Although the access process is quite obvious, most of the time, learners do not understand the importance of reading lists. Therefore, here at KeyLinks, we wanted to clarify what reading lists are and why they are considered one of the main pillars of the whole student learning experience.
A reading list is defined by Collins Dictionary as ‘a list of sources (recommended by a teacher or university lecturer) which provide additional background information on a subject being studied’.
Given the definition, let’s now explain how reading lists influence the student experience.
Firstly, it is important to highlight that reading lists are not useless (as many students think), and can be an invaluable resource. Indeed, they help learners save their time during the content research process, above all in the library. Through the use of these virtual lists, students can easily find books which are sorted by category, title and author.
Secondly, by ignoring reading lists learners rely only on their notes, and if they need more content, they lose their time in the library, looking for documents that might be included in the resource list created by teachers at the beginning of the year.
Thirdly, by referring to reading lists, students have fewer issues when writing assignments. Indeed, by integrating their notes and the advised content, they are halfway in the completion of their assignments.
Finally, students who read through and engage with the reading list content have more opportunities of achieving better grades, as well as make a good impression to their teachers. Indeed, by including this content in the essay’s reference section, they demonstrate to lecturers that they have read the resources suggested.
In conclusion, it is important that students do not ignore their reading lists as these support them during their assignment writing process, as well as help save time and achieve successful grades.
